School Council
School Councils play a vital role in Victorian government schools, working with the Principal to provide effective governance, set the school’s strategic direction, oversee finances and facilities, develop key policies, and engage with the broader community to enhance educational opportunities for students.
The Principal and School Council focus on long-term planning and the school’s vision rather than daily operations, ensuring goals are met and the best possible educational outcomes are delivered.
Membership is both rewarding and challenging. The School Council is responsible for setting and communicating policies on local curriculum, resource allocation, budgeting, maintenance and improvements to buildings and grounds, and reporting back to the College community.
The School Council meets on the third Monday of every month during the school year, except during school holidays. If a scheduled meeting falls in the holidays, it lapses rather than being rescheduled.
Council composition (term of office: April 1 – March 31):
Six parent members
Five DET-employed members (including the Principal)
Four co-opted (community) members
Parent, carer and DET positions are filled through an election process, except for the Principal who is automatically a DET member and serves as the Executive Officer. Co-opted members are appointed at the Council’s discretion, with one position routinely allocated to students from the Student Leadership Council (shared position with one vote).
All members serve two-year terms and elections for half the members occur before 31 March each year, prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held before the March Council meeting. The College welcomes expressions of interest from parents, carers and community members who wish to be involved in any way.
Committees of School Council
The School Council operates a committee system to carry out its functions. Committees include councillors and seconded members, ensuring parent and carer, teacher, and student perspectives are represented in policy recommendations and development.
Current committees:
Finance – 3rd Monday of the month (prior to School Council meeting)
Facilities – 2nd Monday of the month
Education – 1st Monday of the month
Leadership and Strategic Implementation – as required
