BSC Greenwood Farm

Greenwood Farm is Bundoora Secondary College’s vibrant urban farm — a place where hands‑on learning, community engagement, and environmental responsibility come together. More than a farm, it is an evolving ecosystem where students grow food, raise animals, care for the land, and develop real‑world skills that prepare them for future pathways.

Greenwood Farm began as an under‑used patch of land and, through the work of dedicated staff, students, and community partners, has grown into a thriving centre for sustainable education. Students have helped design garden beds, build infrastructure, establish animal programs, and shape a space that reflects the college’s commitment to authentic, applied learning. Today, the farm is a symbol of what young people can achieve when they are trusted with meaningful responsibility and empowered to learn by doing.

At the heart of Greenwood Farm is a circular food system that helps students understand every part of the journey from soil to plate:

  • Soil preparation, planting, propagation, and harvesting

  • Composting and waste recovery to return nutrients back to the soil and to improve it’s fertility and productivity

  • Seasonal market gardening using both traditional and modern methods

  • Animal care, including reptiles, fish, poultry, and the student-established Pygmy Goat Stud

Produce from the farm supplies the school canteen, Food Technology kitchen, and Farm Café, with surplus sold through the Farm Produce Store. Students experience food production as both a science and a business.

The farm underpins the school’s Urban Agriculture & Conservation pathway offering authentic, applied learning from Years 7–12. Students participate in market gardening, conservation projects, animal husbandry, sustainability practices, and systems thinking. They also have access to nationally recognised VET programs in agriculture, horticulture, conservation and ecosystem management, animal care, and rural operations — helping prepare them for emerging careers in food systems, sustainability, and environmental science.

The farm’s learning philosophy is grounded in doing. Students design wicking beds, build garden infrastructure, raise animals, run market stalls, solve environmental challenges, and learn safe tool use as part of becoming confident, capable, world‑ready learners. Every part of the food system is a learning opportunity — from composting food waste to irrigation planning, from harvesting leafy greens to serving customers in the Farm Café. Through their active involvement students develop: confidence and resilience; leadership and teamwork; practical agricultural and environmental skills; business, customer service, and enterprise experience; and a deeper understanding of sustainability and food systems.

More than just a farm, BSC Greenwood Farm is an evolving ecosystem of education, sustainability, community, and innovation. It’s a place where young people gain the skills and mindset to shape a healthier, more sustainable future — and where learning genuinely grows.
