Transition into Entry

Entry Level students are well supported in their transition to secondary college from primary school.

At Bundoora Secondary College, we understand the importance of a smooth transition from primary to secondary school, and as such, have developed a transition program that spans a year!

Before students even start their first day of secondary school, we engage them in a variety of ways including:

MEET & GREET INFORMATION EVENING

A night to meet key staff and the Principal class, to gain further information after enrolment and an opportunity for parents and students to learn more about the secondary college experience. Students will be issued some specific information as well as forms to complete on the evening.

FLYING SOLO

Our ‘Flying Solo’ program is day for students who will be attending Bundoora Secondary College without other students from their primary school cohort. This day is an opportunity for these students to meet and create connections in a smaller group setting before the Orientation Day for all incoming Entry students. Identified families will receive an invitation from the College.

FAMILIARISATION DAYS

Students identified as benefitting from extra time to get to know the school and staff prior to Orientation Day will be invited by the College to participate in our Familiarisation Program.

STATE WIDE ORIENTATION DAY

A day for all incoming Entry students to get to know the school, meet their peers and experience a day of secondary school. Students participate in hands-on activities related to a range of subject areas.

On the first day of the school year, all Entry students begin with only other new students to the school, to help them get to know their new school environment before the other students return from summer break. On this first day, they meet their PAL teacher, who will be their primary point of contact for any issues or concerns throughout their time at Bundoora Secondary College. They also setup up their computer and complete a digital learning skill building session.

During Term 1, a Transition Camp is held for all Entry students to allow students to get to know other members of their cohort outside of their class groups. During this camp, students are also challenged to step outside their comfort zone and support their peers through several physical activities such as abseiling, canoeing, raft-building and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My child receives support (high ability and/or additional needs) at their current primary school. When will I speak to someone from BSC about my child and their needs?

A: After receiving your enrolment forms, BSC will reach out to the current primary school and ask them to complete a transition form. In Term 4, once these are all received, BSC will start to set up meetings with the primary school, and it is at this point, based on feedback from the primary school, we will reach out to parents / carers. Please be patient with us while we work through this process, which can take at least until the end of November. Please contact us then if you still have concerns.

Q: My child is the only student from their school coming to BSC, but we have not had an invitation yet about the Flying Solo program. What do we do?

A: Invitations for Flying Solo will be emailed to parents/carers by the 17th of October. If you do not receive an email after this date, please contact BSC.

Q: I think my child would benefit from the Familiarisation Days Program. How are students short listed for this?

A: A short list of students who will most benefit from Familiarisation Days mainly comes from the Transition information provided by primary school teachers. Invitations for Familiarisation Days will be emailed to parents/carers by the 24th of October.

Q: What if we can’t attend the allocated Literacy and Numeracy days?

A:  At the start of Term 4, you will receive a link to sign up to a testing time slot. Click the 'none of these are suitable' and we will get in touch with you.

Q:  What should my child/ student wear on their first day?

A:   In line with our Student Uniform and Dress Code Policy, students have the choice to wear either the BSC Uniform, or alternative appropriate clothing. This is in line with our school philosophy of student choice, and empowerment. However, we find that most Entry students feel comfortable wearing their BSC polo shirt on the first day.

Q: What are the bus routes to BSC?

A: More information on transportation to school can be found here. We also know many families that plan to commute to BSC via public transport do a practice run over the holidays to be better prepared for the first day!

Q: How does the canteen work?

A: To see our menu and download our ordering system, click here

Q: What if as parents we want to get to know other parents in the BSC community, or be more involved?

A:  We believe a successful education is a close partnership between families and the college. Here's more information on how you can be more involved.

Q: How do I get my Compass Login? How do I use Compass

A: Your Compass login is unique and confidential. Please come to our Meet & Greet Information Evening (register via Trybooking) to receive your login details. If you cannot attend the event, please email us after the 23rd of October, confirming your child's name and DOB, and we can provide you with these details. â€‹
